The Pain
I’m so pissed about Indie 103.1 going down. It’s difficult to repress the inner music snob in me with this happening. How can anyone be satisfied with Linkin Park, Offspring (KROQ, STAR), Ne-Yo, Katy Perry, Britney Spears (KIIS) T.I., Lil Wayne and Kanye West (POWER) all day long? It’s bullshit. Indie played quality music regardless of how little their listenership was. I think the term “indie” is used so loosely in music that the indie genre has become a small subsection of mainstream music. However, Indie 103.1 was truely “indie”: branching off to do what you want to do, which in this case was playing good music, whether it pleases a large or small amount of people. Just last week they played “Y Control” by YYY in the middle of the afternoon not because it’s a new YYY single (it’s about 6 years old), or because YYY is really popular (because they’re not). They played it because “Y Control” was awesome in 2003 and is awesome in 2009. Indie also put on those awesome free concerts at the Hammer museum in Westwood, which I found out is one of the coolest places in the summer to see music. Well, you can listen to the “new” online Indie here. Wonder how long this will last.
In other music related news, I just found out No Doubt is coming back on tour and recording a new record. They were never my favorite, but they wrote some really good songs. I’m glad they’re back.
Franz Ferdinand’s new album “Tonight” isn’t bad. Some catchy tracks. It’s very disco.
